The decision to impose the ban on using artificial coloring agents has had a direct impact on Gobi Manchurian demand in Bangalore, with reports stating that business had witnessed a 80% decline.
The Government of Karnataka banned the use of artificial food colors, including Rhodamine B ( RhB) , in Gobi Manchurian and cotton candy due to health concerns. The ban was imposed after the state health department tested 171 samples of Gobi Manchurian and found 107 of them contained artificial coloring. The health ministry said that consuming snacks containing these artificial colors may pose long-term health risks, including cancer. Rhb is a chemical compound commonly used in synthetic dyes for coloring silk, jute, leather, cotton, and wool, as well as in the cosmetics and plastics industries. Its low cost, however also makes it a popular choice for food coloring.
The ban will result in imprisonment, fine, and cancellation of eatery license. Minister said flouting the direction would invite a jail term of up to seven years and a fine of up to 10 lakh. The food safety wing of the health department will take up statewide awareness and campaigns to drive home the message against the usage of these chemicals. They will deploy more personnel for sampling and regular checks of stalls & eateries.
