Mathematics is one of the key contributors to the current advancements achieved by our society since its inception. The critical discovery of ‘0’ by Aryabhatta, a noted Indian mathematician and astronomer, has pushed for further calculations regarding numerous planets and other fascinating discoveries of everything around us. The abacus is one of the oldest calculating devices still being widely practiced everywhere, as numerous studies have proven it to be beneficial for enhancing the practitioner’s mental capabilities.

‘The abacus is the ancient predecessor to the calculator, a symbol of human ingenuity’ is indeed justifiable with its simple design and its ability to complete complex calculations with ease. In the modern era of calculators and other advanced tools, abacus enthusiasts worldwide are studying and practicing the art of numbers with this ancient tool in institutions like AA Academy in Jayanagar, Bangalore, established in 2000 by the esteemed and brilliant Mrs. AlliRani Agatheeswaran, a science graduate and a numbers enthusiast.

Prior to establishing AA Academy, AlliRani would contribute immensely towards the growth of her husband’s meshing business. In 1998, UCMAS, a Malaysian-based Abacus Academy stepped its feet on The Indian Soil and began providing franchisees by 1999. AlliRani seized the opportunity, purchased the franchisee, and established her initial institution in Chennai. It sparked an interest in ABACUS among numerous kids, and soon attendance began to swell up. This solidified her decision to spread out, leading to the eventual establishment of AA Academy.

AA Academy began with twelve students, sparking the curiosity of on-lookers as it was the initial establishment dedicated to teaching abacus and mental arithmetic. Curiosity converted into interest, and the number of students skyrocketed within a short period. A key factor that pushed the rise of AA Academy is its courses and the material. Designed to perform more than imparting the formulas and secrets of mathematics, it plays a significant role in rejuvenating the students’ ‘Brain Power’, sharpening concentration, comprehension, and listening skills.  

The courses offered by AA Academy are Abacus Mental Arithmetic, Singapore Math, Handwriting Course, Spelling Bee, Mindbrain Activation, and interestingly, Vedic Mathematics, which AlliRani had mastered from her guru and with his permission, curated a course on the subject and has been imparting it since 2014 to currently over 1000 students. Each subject’s courses are designed with various levels of advancement to ensure each student grasps each concept adequately and implements them appropriately before moving to the course’s next stage.

The COVID-19 Pandemic affected AA Academy, and AlliRani preferred teaching students offline as it would create a better impact, which led to its shutdown for over a year. However, it was able to bounce back to its default position of creating a positive impact on students. AA Academy’s child development programs have been awarded with grand success on each occasion as it teaches in numerous schools. It also organises and hosts ‘Abacus Habba’, an annual competitive event that provides a platform to demonstrate the abilities of young minds.  

AlliRani’s dedication to ensuring the proper mental development of each child has led AA Academy to help over 16,000 students worldwide, including places like Dubai, London, and Australia. Its 20 fully-trained and skilled ABACUS Course instructors play a vital role in discovering the genius within each student, enabling them to channel it each moment.  Completing its mission of becoming the first choice of parents for their kid’s brain development, AA Academy is fulfilling its vision of serving every child globally.
