Breaking Barriers: The Remarkable Journey of Mr. Nixon Joseph — From " Banker to Marathoner and Changemaker”

Mr Nixon Joseph, a retired State Bank of India officer, is an inspiration to everyone. He is a Group Executive Director, Dignity Education Vision International (DEVI Sansthan), Lucknow, since November 2024. This is a non-profit organisation established in 1992, serving the education sector. From 2021-2024, he was CEO, CLT India (Children's Lovecastles Trust), Bengaluru.

Former President & Chief Operating Officer, SBI Foundation, he is a post-graduate in English Language and Literature, and joined the State Bank of India in 1985 as a probationary officer. As a career Banker, he has extensive experience in various facets of Banking like Corporate Credit, Retail Operations, International Banking, etc., and has worked all across India.

Nixon was also served as Manager(Operations), SBI Bahrain and Chief Executive Officer, SBI Tokyo branch(2008-2012). He is a Diploma holder in International Banking & Finance, Certified Credit Professional, Certified Banking Compliance Professional and Certified Information Systems Banker. He was instrumental in bringing out the Carbon Credit Policy and Green Banking policy of the State Bank of India, India’s largest Bank. Retired from SBI as President & COO, SBI Foundation in May 2021.

During his stint in Tokyo, he was the President of the Sakura Toastmasters Club. His interest in long-distance running has led to his completion of 72 full marathons (42.195km). He was never an athlete, yet started full marathon running at the age of 45 years, went ahead completing full marathons and is still running, which has been inspiring thousands of people, especially youth, making him popular as  “ SBI’s Marathon legend “

He had participated in all the SBI Green marathons to spread the message of sustainability & be a change. Acknowledged as a Fit India Ambassador by the Government of India’s Fit India movement. Nominated to the Tata Mumbai Marathon Legends Club.

Later Mr.Nixon Joseph joined SBI Foundation in 2016, and during his stint as Coordinator, SBI Youth for India fellowship program, he was instrumental in inspiring and mentoring 100 youths every year, and had taken the fellowship to a higher level. He has been mentoring many social entrepreneur units started by SBI Youth for India fellows. Has completed the ‘Social intrapreneurship” course of Ashoka Changemakers with distinction, the Social Impact Auditor exam and the Sustainability & Climate Finance course. 

As President of SBI Foundation, the CSR arm of State Bank of India, he was supporting strong impact and sustainable projects to help the underprivileged and needy and lend support to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. He was driving the Centre of Excellence for persons with disabilities, implementing projects for a diversified and inclusive society.

A regular speaker in various CSR & Sustainability forums all across India, during the lockdown period (2020-21), he has participated in more than 275 webinars as chief guest/guest of honour /panellist speaker. SDG eChoupal, supported by Niti Aayog and other international organisations, has nominated him as SDG Ambassador. He is the recipient of the Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Award 2018 for excellence in public service and the Dr Kalam Memorial Ignited Minds Award.

 

Mr Nixon's name figures in the “Be the Inspiration” Book released by the Rotary Club, Mumbai, where 45 inspiring Indians were listed. He was felicitated as a “COVID warrior” by the Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra for spearheading COVID-19 relief activities. He is a visiting faculty member of the International Institute for Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, Goa. Gave a presentation to the Hon’ble President of India on the CSR activities of SBI & SBI Foundation.

 

He has been a Jury member of various awards/challenges related to CSR/Sustainability/Social Enterprises. He is a member of the Governing Council of Yes Bank Foundation, a Member of the Internal Quality Advisory Committee of Amity University, Mumbai, & Advisor on CSR & SDGs to various NGOs and Foundations. Also, Senior CSR Consultant of GPCL( promoted by Export Import Bank of India), Advisory Board of CESI, IIM Kozhikode & Board of Studies ( Sports Management ) UC College, Aluva. He is also a Social Impact Auditor
