Garena, the gaming division of Singaporean tech conglomerate Sea, has decided to delay the highly anticipated launch of Free Fire India's battle royale title for "a few more weeks." Originally scheduled for release on September 5, the game was making a comeback after being suspended for about 18 months due to national security concerns. It's noteworthy that Garena also offers a premium variant called 'Free Fire Max,' which was not suspended by Indian authorities.

The company explained that this postponement is aimed at ensuring they provide the "optimal experience to all our Free Fire India fans" right from the start. They mentioned, "In addition to refining the gameplay, we are taking some time to fully complete our localization of the Free Fire India experience."

Garena initially unveiled its plans for Free Fire India on August 31, welcoming former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni as its brand ambassador. Vaibhav Das Mundhra, senior manager and game producer at Garena, confirmed that Free Fire India will be an exclusive app for the Indian market, featuring content and features tailored to the local audience. Additionally, Dhoni will appear as a playable character named 'Thala' within the game.

In an effort to enhance data security and localization, Garena has partnered with Yotta, a Hiranandani Group company and a MeitY empanelled cloud service provider. Yotta will oversee the management of Indian users' personal data on local servers and provide network connectivity services to support Garena's offerings in India, including esports.

Furthermore, Garena has signed a collaboration agreement with the Uttar Pradesh government to promote esports development in India.

This development comes three months after Krafton secured approval from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to resume the India-only app Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) on a three-month trial basis in May 2023, following a 10-month suspension. Moneycontrol exclusively reported on September 1 that Krafton had received full government approval to operate BGMI after passing a three-month audit, with subsequent quarterly assessments.

In 2021, Free Fire emerged as the highest revenue-generating app on Google Play and Apple's App Store in India, amassing an estimated $34.3 million in app spending, as reported by app intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

The return of both Free Fire and BGMI to India is expected to revitalize the country's rapidly growing esports industry, which was significantly affected by their suspension last year. India currently boasts over 1 million esports players, a number expected to surge with Free Fire's relaunch, particularly since the game is well-suited for low-end Android devices, according to Manish Agarwal, founder of Kratos Studios, a community-based gaming platform operating under the IndiGG brand.

Animesh Agarwal, founder of 8Bit Creatives, an esports consulting and talent agency, predicts that Free Fire India's relaunch will provide a significant boost to the creators' community. He expects that by offering creators diverse and immersive content, the game will enable them to expand their fanbase within the industry. Additionally, as the game garners renewed attention and engagement, it's likely to attract increased interest and investments from brands into the esports ecosystem.
