In the bustling city of Bangalore, amidst the growing healthcare landscape, stands Shree Multi Speciality Clinic, a testament to dedication, perseverance, and a deep-seated commitment to women's health. At its helm is Dr. Srilakshmi A.V., an accomplished MBBS and MS (OBG) professional, whose journey from a family aspiration to a successful entrepreneur is nothing short of inspiring. Dr. Srilakshmi's path into medicine was initially paved by a poignant family loss.

Overcoming Early Challenges in Medical Education.

Her journey, however, was not without its trials. Entering a field where she had no prior family guidance proved challenging. Her initial years were "very, very difficult," marked by emotional strain as she grappled with the distinct demands of medical studies. A turning point came when an anatomy professor, recognising her struggle and lack of familial medical background, took her under his wing and provided crucial guidance on how to study effectively. "He was the first person I can't forget," she shares, attributing her subsequent success in exams to his timely intervention.

Balancing Clinical Practice and Entrepreneurship

Today, Dr. Srilakshmi stands as the only doctor, the only gynaecologist, and the only woman entrepreneur in her family to have established a multi-speciality clinic. Her clinic, built "step by step without any guidance," is a source of immense pride. She also serves as an Associate Professor and Unit Head in a medical college, balancing her academic responsibilities with her role as Medical Director for Shree Multi Speciality Clinic.

In her daily practice, Dr. Srilakshmi addresses a range of common health concerns for women, including adolescent nutritional issues, PCOS, anaemia, and infertility, alongside routine pregnancy care. She emphasises a personalised approach to patient care, particularly in sensitive cases. "Nothing is pre-set up," she explains, highlighting that screenings and tests are "tailor-made" to each patient's needs.

The Importance of Preventive Care and Debunking Misconceptions

Dr. Srilakshmi strongly advocates for annual health checkups for women after 30, including a Pap smear, citing alarming statistics about cervical cancer. "Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, and in India, every eight minutes, one woman is dying due to cancer," she reveals. She passionately promotes the HPV vaccination, calling it "the first gift they can give to their daughters" and urging women under 50 to get vaccinated and vaccinate their daughters.

A significant challenge she observes is the prevalence of misconceptions and the reliance on "half-baked knowledge" from social circles or "Google knowledge." She cautions against self-treatment based on online information, stressing that Google offers "general knowledge," not personalised medical advice. "I would suggest please use Google to some extent, but not to risk your own life," she advises, noting instances of even educated individuals suffering adverse outcomes from self-medication.

Technological Advancements in Gynaecological Care

The advent of technology has revolutionised gynaecological care, according to Dr. Srilakshmi. This technological advancement significantly reduces hospital stay, pain, and invasiveness for patients. For aspiring gynaecologists, Dr. Srilakshmi's advice is clear: "Until you have the passion and have patience... to treat and help the women or the community, please don't take gynaecology or any part of medicine." She underscores the importance of compassion, sacrifice, and a patient mindset in this demanding field.

The Role of Awareness and Education in Urban Women’s Health.

Finally, she highlights the crucial role of awareness and education in improving women's health in urban communities. Media, including radio, television, and TED talks, play a vital role in disseminating health information. Dr. Srilakshmi herself conducts talks in corporate settings, educating women on common conditions, identifying illness signs, and promoting regular checkups, balanced diet, physical activity, and mental well-being. She urges women to prioritise "quality" over "quantity" in life, emphasising that investing in health ensures a better and longer life. Her journey is a beacon for those who aspire to make a difference in healthcare, driven by purpose and resilience.
