It was more about encouraging an organic lifestyle than marketing organic food for Yash Mehta, Rajan Patel, and Raj Jain. Even by the time they founded Shudh Jeevan Pvt Limited in 2017, India was experiencing a surge in organic businesses.
Homestead was gaining traction in metropolitan areas such as Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram, and sometimes even Ahmedabad, where the trio is situated. They didn't want to be caught up in another daily grind, so they created a new model.
The campaign, dubbed 'Farmse to Farmpe,' intended to bring customers and their children straight to farms to witness the farming process. The customer will be able to meet the 50 farmers who will be raising the food.
This not only enhanced consumer confidence in the organic product because they knew they were obtaining real organic food, but several households also noticed that their children were not wasting food after witnessing the laborious agricultural process.
In 2018, they established 'Farm Se on Wheels,' a portable farm that sells organic vegetables and fruits throughout cities, ensuring that customers receive high-quality produce.
Their rising consumer base and, as a result, revenue mirrored the impact.
Other aspects of the organisation include a zero-waste store and mobile farms that promote an organic lifestyle.
With these thoughts in mind, the entity has kept the costs of organic vegetables and fruits close to those of non-organic food.
Given the low prices, the founders were able to boost their earnings thrice. Currently selling both online and offline, B2B sales to over 30 retailers in Ahmedabad and a few other cities, and corporate and festival gifts are all part of their business plan.
Seasonal goods such as mangoes, jackfruits, custard apples, and other fruits and vegetables make up a significant portion of their business and are distributed across India via their partners. They improved their revenue from Rs 40,00,000 in FY 2019-20 to Rs 1.25 crore in FY 20-21. In the coming quarter, we hope to surpass the 2.5-million-dollar mark.
Surprisingly, none of the founders come from a farming family. Rajan is an MBA graduate, while Yash and Raj (26) are childhood buddies who both have CA degrees. They opted to leave their careers after working for multinational corporations such as KPMG and Grant Thornton.
Yash and Raj grew up in Marwar, a small Rajasthani town where all of the food was chemical-free. That was something they didn't have in the city. When they were exploring organic solutions, they came across Rajan, who was running a business called 'Greenobar.' When these two came up to him, they had similar thoughts. That's how the business got started.
When it came to choosing an offline store for clients in Ahmedabad, the founders sought something that reflected their company's philosophy. They came up with BYOC (bring your container) and the 'pay by waste' shopping strategy.
The creators utilised bamboo rather than wood for the racks, so all of the lamps are from Kumbharwada, which is known for its clay goods. Lippan, a mud-and-mirror combination, is used to coat the walls. This is a Kutch-based old technique that uses locally available building materials such as clay and camel manure to maintain the inside cool.
The shop also sells pickles and mouthwashes in addition to fruits and vegetables. Homemakers make some of the value-added items, like pickles, as part of their 'Ghar Se' campaign.
Furthermore, the online store features over 300 organic and environmentally friendly products, such as cosmetics, dry fruits, baby food, and spices.
The founders want to open zero-waste shops in four to six locations in India over the next two to three years, after receiving such a positive reaction. Customers are allowed to manufacture their organic juice at an organic juice bar by pedaling a bicycle.
