Taking the initial step into a business requires a lot of guts, especially when you're leaving the security of steady employment and a predictable monthly income. Kiran Dham was just 24 years old when she and her husband Ashish Dham launched a business selling projectors. Ashish had previously worked in a company where he was in charge of projector sales. Globus Infocom, an ed-tech company with sales of Rs 208 crore in FY 2019-20, was founded by his experience in the same industry.
Globus Infocom was founded in 2001 and marketed projectors and display screens
for the first few years before expanding into other products and services. Today,
the company provides digital learning solutions and operates hundreds of
digital language labs and smart classrooms across the United States. They began
in a small rented office in Delhi's Hauz Khas Enclave. Mitsubishi Electric gave
them the countrywide distributorship for projectors and display screens. One of their first clients was BSNL. "In the first year, we sold 200
projectors to BSNL." Until 2010, the number (of projectors sold to BSNL)
doubled every year." The display screens (or data walls, as they were
known back then) were installed in army and police command centers. Kiran and
Ashish started with only the two of them and grew their staff to 20 people in
six months. They now have 250 employees and their headquarters are in a
three-story facility in Noida that they own.
The business has exploded since the Covid lockout, with the company's turnover
more than doubling from Rs 100 crore in FY 2019-20 to Rs 208 crore in FY
2020-21. This year's good fortunes have continued, and Kiran expects to reach Rs 350
crore in FY 2021-22. He went to work for a company that sold projectors in 1994.
He had risen to the post of Area Sales Manager when he left the company in 1999,
and he married Kiran the same year. They started with Rs 10,000 to register the company and have since invested
more money. They required funding to complete the project after they started
receiving orders. Only after they had mounted the projector at the client's
location did their job come to an end. So they took out loans from friends and
relatives, which they quickly returned. Their hopes for growth were well
exceeded. Their first year's revenue was Rs 63 lakh.
The company's revenue dropped from Rs 78 crore in 2007 to Rs 11 crore in 2012.
In 2008, the company had 300 employees; by 2013, it had been reduced to just
40. To put it another way, Kiran redesigned the company to meet new market demands,
and it was a game-changer.And the company grew from simply providing computers
and projectors to subsequently setting up entire units in a user-friendly
manner so that teachers could easily manage them.
From processors to keyboards to biometric attendance systems, they started
selling it all. The company's revenue surpassed Rs 100 crore in 2016 but
remained stable for the next three years until the world was devastated by the
coronavirus pandemic. They had a ready-made database to market their services because they were
already in contact with schools and universities. Through word-of-mouth and the
company's strong marketing and web promotions, more institutions learned about
their services. They provided schools with a platform on which teachers could teach the same
manner they did in school and exams could be taken online. They collaborated
extensively in the K12 space and established digital laboratories. They are
given an empty room by the schools, which they furnish with furniture, blinds,
a digital board, AV equipment, a projector, and air conditioning. Such
classrooms were unheard of in rural areas of Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
To increase communication skills across the country, they have put over 5,000
digital language labs (English, Hindi, and Sanskrit). The teaching materials
for these laboratories are also provided by Globus. Kiran is a music and
literature enthusiast on a personal level. She is a tremendous fitness fanatic
who can be found working out at the gym whenever she is not at work.
