Born in a farmer's family which was financially backward in Bijoor, a small village in Udupi the achievement of Mr. Govind babu Poojary defies all the notion that high education is necessary to become a successful entrepreneur. Having done his 7th standard education in Baindoor Mr Poojary had to leave his education and in order to support his brother and sisters, he left his village and went to Mumbai along with one Shivamma Poojarthi who had a small hotel in Nala Supara of Mumbai. There he started his livelihood washing the vessels and later started making tea and selling them at various places. After 3 years his younger brother to whom he was very attached fell from a coconut tree and died en route to the hospital, this left him highly disturbed, and once again he left for Mumbai to make a better living for his family.
He started working in canteens as a helper and soon learned the art of cooking and became a cook. After working hard and saving an amount of 3 to 4 lakhs he started a small hotel in front of a five-star hotel in Juhu, but the business was a failure and he incurred losses which left him highly disappointed and shattered him. He came back to the village and after the blessings of his village deity, he went back to Mumbai and through Mr. Francis who was a union leader in a 5-star hotel, started working in Ramada Hotel. Yet again he had to start his career washing utensils, but very soon through his hard work and dedication, he was given a chance to cook. A talk with the Chef of that hotel made him realize that he wanted to do something on his own and achieve success led him to start CHEF TALK along with 5 other members and soon they had started supplying food to many companies and so the success story of Chef talk began.
Quality and Kitchen high standards and good feedback from the clients and mouth publicity soon led them to success and they have started sending out 1.5 lakhs meals per day in 5 states. Mr. Poojary is very happy with his achievement and attributes his success to his deep knowledge and experience in the field.
The central Kitchen is still in Mumbai and they have a kitchen at Bommanahalli in Bangaluru which supplies food to most of the major corporate companies from Whitefield to Electronic city. Around 5,500 employees are working in his company and they are all looked after very well by the company which has provided PF and Health insurance to all its employees. The turnover of the company has reached 150 crores consistently from last 3 years.
Serving in Indira Canteens: The company has bagged the tender for catering services to the prestigious Indira Canteen plans of the state government beating 22 companies. They had bagged this along with 3 other companies, but on the day of opening the two other companies backed out, and on the request of the commissioners of BBMP Mr. Poojary promised them to give a good service to all the 100 outlets and achieved it successfully. He also catered to Rahul Gandhi’s program in the state and won the appreciation of the state leaders. He attributes this success to his high standard kitchen and to the international standard that they have maintained.
Mr. Poojary has high plans of expanding his catering company to 2 to 3 states more and also increase the employment to 10,000 workers.
Lately, he has also started a factory in Hebbal on a small scale which is manufacturing Fish Wafers the first of its kind in the country. He plans to do it on a large scale in his hometown of Barndoor where he plans to give employment to 500 to 1000 people and also help local fishermen. The Wafers presently are being produced in 4 flavors.
Awards and Recognitions:
Mr. Poojary has been awarded many awards for his business as well as his charitable ventures through his charitable institution VARALAKSHMI SOUHARDA CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY. He has adopted 42 children and taken full responsibility for their education. He plans to open a free school for children so that no child will be deprived of education.
