One of the busiest airports is located in the capital Delhi, India. It is named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The airport has high traffic of passengers, flights, and cargo. It is situated in Palam, 16 km from the New Delhi city center and 15kms from the southwest of the New Delhi Railway station. It is the 6th busiest airport in Asia and the 17th busiest airport in the world.

History

It was begun as Royal Air Force during the Second World War by British Government. But after India got Independence it served the Indian Air Force.  Later in 1962 it officially became the passenger airport due to the high rise of commercial aviation in India. At first, the airport could accommodate only 1300 passengers per hour. The new terminal was constructed and opened in 1969 at a cost of Rs.900, 000.

The airport got significantly expanded over the years. Air India started operating from Delhi as their hub. Many international flights from other countries come to Palam Airport, putting Delhi at the center of the action. In 1986, again a new terminal was constructed to accommodate more passengers and finally, the airport was renamed Indira Gandhi International Airport after her death in 1984.


Operations

Terminal 1 was used for Domestic arrivals and departures. Terminal 2 was used for International Arrivals and Departures till 2010. But due to the high rise of traffic again and again, finally, the Airport Authority of India has decided to hand over the construction and management of Terminal 3 to Private Organization.

Terminal 3 was opened in 2010 with a maximum capacity of 34million passengers. All the International Flight operations were carried out from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 is closed for renovation. Some of the airlines even started their domestic operations from Terminal 3.

Facilities

Terminal 3 has sleeping pods for passengers who can take a rest or have a nap if the flights are delayed by 6-8 hours with a flat-screen TV, free wifi, mini bar, and working desk.

There are also special rooms for babies and children, kids play area, foot massagers, prayer rooms, medical care, foreign exchange services, ATM’s, pharmacy services, restaurant & cafes, fast food outlets,

Separate lounge facilities for passengers who require more private space with various lounge operators like Maharaja Lounge, ITC Hotels Group, and many others.

In the fiscal year 2020, the airport has handled 67.3million passengers. The airport is still being expanded and by the end of 2030, Indira Gandhi International Airport will accommodate 100million

passengers.
