2023 is witnessing the booming return of The Thalaiva - Rajnikanth, as he’s starred in the Tamil action-comedy film Jailer, which is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. Since its release on 10th of August, Jailer has captured the minds and hearts of audiences and critics alike, grossing ₹72 crores in the opening day, and it has been only skyrocketing to the top since then. It had reached 207.15 crores by the sixth day across all languages . Even though it slightly underperformed in North India due to its clash with Gadar, Jailer was still able to bag the record of the second-fastest earning Tamil Film to cross the 500 crore mark. A majority of the critics credit Rajnikanth’s performance as the main booster, with a solid cast of excellent actors and actresses to match his energy and special cameos with Shivaraj Kumar, Mohan Lal, and Jackie Shroff, that spicened up the well-cooked plot and the cast’s presence.
Sridevi S of The Times of India gave 3 out of 5 stars and wrote "It’s director Nelson's show in the first half, superstar Rajini takes the baton in the second half."
Kirubhakar Purushothaman of The Indian Express gave 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote "[the] Nelson Dilipkumar film is Rajinikanth's version of Kamal Haasan 's Vikram , but with a twist. Saying that doesn't take away anything from this fun-filled entertainer.
Pratikshya Mishra of The Quint gave 3 out of 5 stars and wrote "Without Rajinikanth, Jailer might not have had the same magnetism as it does but since the star is on screen, flicking his shades and throwing lighters in the air, it’s a whole different story."
Divya Nair of Rediff gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and stated that "This is an altogether different version of a brutal Rajinikanth, something you and I had probably never imagined before."
Superstar Rajinikanth had a slightly unstable last decade or so, with his films underperforming since Endhiran in 2010. There were some bright sparks like Petta, Kaala, and 2.0, but they were few and also a few years ago. With Jailer, Thalaiva has silenced his doubters big time and in the process, has breathed new life into an industry that was grappling with a dry spell of its own. According to Hindustan Times, Jailer has been the third highest-grossing film in India in 2023, with Shah Rukh Khan's 'Pathaan' and Rebel Star Prabhas's 'Adipurush' staying a mile ahead. Sun Pictures' head Kalanithi Maran gifted Rajinikanth and Nelson as well as Jailer's music composer Anirudh Ravichander with a BMW and two Porsches.
