In September 2020, the organization was rated as top among organic dairy farms in India which is providing 100% pure cow milk. The organization was founded in 2010.
Shashi Kumar is the co-founder and the current CEO of India’s First Organic Milk Company, with the goal of enabling rural entrepreneurship and wealth creation among small and marginalized farmers.
Shashi Kumar graduated Masters in Telecommunication Engineering, Software and Telecom Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago and worked in the telecommunications Industry for close to 17 years.
Working to address the challenge of economic viability of farmers with small and medium landholding and exploring technology induction and automation of small farms.
India is the world’s biggest producer and consumer of dairy. Yet conventional dairy farming is unregulated, often inhumane, and with no promise of quality or taste. Akshayakalpa Organic milk and milk products are certified as per the guidelines set by APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Product Export Development Authority) and by Jaivik Bharat.
Akshayakalpa consider their impact on the environment every step of the way, that’s why they work with self-sustainable farms. Their farmers work to maintain biodiversity on their farms, decrease waste by following closed-loop soil management system that gives back to nature and also ensures quality organic produce.
The idea of young people being trained to take up agriculture/farming as a vocation of choice was transformed into idea of rural entrepreneurship model under Akshayakalpa. They train and monitor farmers for 12-18 months on organic farming, ensuring healthy production practices.
Today, the company is working with farmers in and around Tiptur , Karnataka and Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, and grooming them to be entrepreneurs by transforming their farming operations from livelihood focused to wealth creation opportunity. The organization plans to build its network in future by training and collaborating with more than 100 such farmers and satellite farms owned by farmers in Chengulpattu.To service the Bengaluru market the milk brand had already infused over ₹100 crore in Tiptur’s rural ecosystem by the end of year 2020.
Akshayakalpa does not own any dairy farms but its staff organize and continuously guide the local farmers who own these farms. Akshayakalpa owns a 40,000 liter/day capacity Organic Milk Processing Plant where milk collected from the farmers working with Akshayakalpa is packed and processed.The current capacity of plant in 2021 March had crossed 40,000 liters per day whereas in September 2016 the plant had a capacity to process only 7000 liters of milk every day.The plant is set up on 24 acres of land,13 km away from Tiptur town.The milk processed in this plant is supplied to Bangalore and Tumkur towns on a daily basis and is 100% organic.
The company works with the goal of enabling rural entrepreneurship and wealth creation among farmers in and around Tiptur, Arsikere, Channarayapatna, Chikkanayakana Halli, Kadur and Holenarasipura. The company is also planning to expand its operations in Chennai with an investment of over ₹ 15 crores in the next few years.
