Vinesh Phogat is an Indian professional freestyle wrestler born on August 25, 1994, in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana.She comes from a family of wrestlers, including her uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained her.Vinesh is a multiple Commonwealth Games gold medalist and the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold at the Commonwealth and Asian Games.She has also won two bronze medals at the World Wrestling Championships.Vinesh is a three-time Olympian and became the first Indian female wrestler to reach an Olympic final in 2024.However, she was disqualified for being above the stipulated weight by a mere 100 grams and announced her retirement from the sport.

Early Life and Career:

Vinesh was born in a family of wrestlers and was trained by her uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat.She won her first gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and went on to win gold at the 2018 Asian Games.

Vinesh married fellow wrestler Somvir Rathee in 2018.She was nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards in 2019 and was the first Indian to get a nomination for the award.

Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her Olympic disqualification was accepted by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) and a hearing was scheduled for August 9, 2024.Phogat was disqualified from the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics for being 100 grams overweight. In her appeal, Phogat also requested a joint silver medal, as she had already secured a silver for India before her disqualification.
